Cracker Barrel Criticizes Waffle House Over Egg Surcharge

Cracker Barrel has taken issue with competitor Waffle House over a 50-cent surcharge for each egg ordered in meals. Cracker Barrel stated, “A surcharge on eggs? Well, there’s nothing hospitable about that.” The restaurant chain is promoting its rewards program, offering double rewards points to customers who order eggs between Feb. 6 and Feb. 12.

Waffle House cited rising egg costs and the ongoing egg shortage as reasons for the surcharge, noting that price fluctuations may be short-lived but cannot predict how long the shortage will last. Egg prices are expected to increase by another 20% this year, with the average cost for a dozen eggs in the U.S. reaching $4.15 in December. The shortage is attributed to the ongoing bird flu outbreak, leading to millions of chickens being slaughtered.
