KUWAIT, July 5 (KUNA) — On this day in history:
1931: Kuwait experienced a 4.8 magnitude earthquake, with its epicenter located 33 kilometers beneath Boubyan Island.
1958: Kuwait’s Amir Sheikh Abdullah Al-Salem Al-Sabah signed an offshore oil agreement with the Arabian Oil Co. Ltd., granting the company rights to explore, drill, and store oil in the concession area for a period of 44.5 years.
1961: Amir Sheikh Abdullah Al-Salem Al-Sabah dispatched Sheikh Jaber Al-Ahmad Al-Sabah, then director of the finance department, to several Arab countries to reaffirm Kuwait’s position and counter allegations made by Iraqi leader Abdulkareem Qassem. Sheikh Jaber visited Saudi Arabia, Egypt, Sudan, Libya, Tunisia, Morocco, and Lebanon.
1973: Sheikh Yusuf bin Essa Al-Qinae, a prominent Kuwaiti historian and religious figure, passed away at the age of 90. He served as a judge in religious and personal affairs law. A man of letters, he was one of the founders of Mubarakiya School in 1931, Kuwait’s first formal educational institution, and served as its first director. He also contributed to the establishment of Ahmadiya School and Kuwait Municipality. Sheikh Yusuf was a member of the Shura Council in 1921, the Legislative Council in 1938, and the Awqaf Council in 1949.
1993: Amir Sheikh Jaber Al-Ahmad Al-Sabah appointed Dr. Fayza Al-Kharafi as Rector of Kuwait University, making her the first woman in the Gulf region to hold such a position.
1997: Kuwaiti MPs Sami Al-Munayyes, Meshari Al-Osaimi, and Ahmad Al-Mulaifi requested a parliamentary grilling of Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Finance Nasser Al-Roudhan over issues related to public funds and legal irregularities. A vote of confidence was attempted but failed.
2001: Kuwait and Iran signed a security cooperation agreement in Tehran aimed at combating drug trafficking, infiltration, and illegal fishing.
2018: The Kuwait Fund for Arab Economic Development signed a KD 23.5 million (USD 80 million) loan agreement with Iraq to fund the construction of schools.
