KUWAIT, June 17 (KUNA) — Acting Chief of the Environment Public Authority (EPA), Nouf Behbehani, has reaffirmed the organization’s commitment to protecting natural resources and promoting environmental sustainability through effective initiatives. On the occasion of the World Day to Combat Desertification, Behbehani highlighted EPA’s focus on addressing desertification, a significant environmental challenge affecting food security, ecosystem stability, and quality of life. The authority runs awareness programs to encourage sustainable land use practices and supports local and international efforts to combat desertification and mitigate climate change impacts. One notable initiative is the mangrove planting project in the Jahra Nature Reserve, which aims to enhance coastal vegetation. Dr. Mubarak Al-Hajri, Chief of the Kuwait Geosciences Society, noted that Kuwait is among the Gulf countries most affected by dust storms, according to UN studies. He emphasized the importance of community participation in afforestation, resource management, and investing in research to combat desertification and its adverse effects on health and the economy.
