American Airlines has updated its financial forecast for 2025, reflecting ongoing economic uncertainty that continues to affect consumer spending in the domestic travel sector.
The airline, based in Fort Worth, Texas, recently issued a revised outlook following its latest earnings report. It cited broader economic instability as a key factor influencing consumer behavior. Previously, the company had paused its financial projections in April due to market unpredictability.
For the full year, American Airlines anticipates an adjusted earnings per share ranging from a 20-cent loss to an 80-cent profit. The midpoint of this range is 30 cents per share, which is below the analysts’ average estimate of 61 cents per share, according to LSEG data.
As a carrier that derives more than two-thirds of its passenger revenue from the U.S. domestic market, the company noted that stronger travel demand could push results toward the upper end of the forecast. Conversely, a weaker economy could result in performance closer to the lower end.
CEO Robert Isom acknowledged during an earnings call that the domestic network has faced challenges due to economic uncertainty and cautious consumer behavior.
The airline reported weaker bookings in July but expects a gradual improvement in August and September.
“We expect that July will be the low point,” Isom stated.
The company forecasts that domestic unit revenue—revenue per seat—will remain below year-ago levels during the third quarter. Non-fuel operating costs are projected to rise by up to 4.5 percent in the same period.
