Newark Airport Faces Flight Delays Due to Weather and Ongoing Challenges

Newark Liberty International Airport is experiencing flight delays primarily due to weather conditions, compounded by outdated technology and an air traffic controller shortage. Airlines such as United, American, and JetBlue are offering travel waivers for passengers flying through Newark, allowing them to rebook flights without change fees. Passengers are advised to monitor their flights via airline apps and sign up for notifications. The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) is implementing a ground delay program to manage traffic flow and ensure safety. United Airlines has also reduced 35 roundtrip flights daily from its Newark hub. The airport’s challenges stem from issues at the Philadelphia TRACON, responsible for directing flights in and out of Newark, and a shortage of fully certified air traffic controllers. FAA Administrator Sean Duffy has called for congressional funding to modernize the air traffic control system and address the controller shortage.
