American Airlines flight diverted to Rome over ‘possible security issue’

An American Airlines flight from New York was diverted to Rome on Sunday due to a “possible security issue,” according to a statement by the airline. Flight 292, which departed from John F. Kennedy International Airport, was en route to Indira Gandhi International Airport in New Delhi when it was diverted. The plane landed safely at Leonardo da Vinci Rome Fiumicino Airport, as confirmed by the airport to ABC News.

The airline emphasized that safety and security are their top priorities and extended gratitude to customers for their understanding. A senior official informed ABC News that a bomb threat was received via email but was later deemed unfounded. Indian authorities reportedly insisted on the aircraft being inspected before continuing to New Delhi.

Passengers were transported by bus to the terminal for screening, and the aircraft is undergoing checks. This is an ongoing situation, and further updates are expected.
