Orthodox Jewish Passenger Removed from Flight Amid Antisemitic Rant

A visibly Jewish man, Yisroel Liebb, was forcibly removed from an airplane bathroom in a state of undress and subjected to an antisemitic rant. Liebb, 20, was traveling from Mexico to the US when he was arrested by US Customs and Border Protection (CBP) agents after being removed from the bathroom pantsless by the plane’s pilot. The CBP agents informed Liebb that he had “no rights here.” Liebb, an Orthodox Jew dressed in religious attire, was on a United Airlines flight from Tulum, Mexico, to Houston, Texas. He entered the restroom approximately 30 minutes into the journey and remained there for upwards of 30 minutes due to constipation. After being checked on by a flight attendant and the pilot, the pilot became enraged, broke the lock on the door, and forced the door open, pulling Liebb out with his pants still around his ankles. Liebb sustained injuries to his head and legs when they hit the restroom’s door frame. The pilot then proceeded to push Liebb and Jacob Sebbag, who had accompanied him, back to their seats while making threats of arrest and derogatory remarks about their Judaism. Upon landing, Liebb and Sebbag were escorted by CBP officers to a detention facility. During the walk, when Liebb questioned the reason for their detention, the officers responded, “This isn\’t a country or state; we are Homeland [Security], you have no rights here.” Both were thrown into separate cells and handcuffed to tables, and their belongings were subjected to intrusive searches. They were eventually released without charges but missed connecting flights to New York, incurring additional costs. The tight handcuffs caused severe wrist pain that persisted for days. Liebb and Sebbag are demanding damages to be determined at trial, in addition to attorneys’ fees. — news from The Jerusalem Post
