Elon Musk Faces Neighborhood Disputes Over Compound

Residents in a high-end Austin suburb are unhappy with their neighbor, Elon Musk, who they say has disrupted their quiet cul-de-sac with service workers and security personnel. Musk bought a $6 million property in West Lake Hills, Texas, in 2022, intending to create a compound for his children and their mothers. He purchased additional houses in the area and made changes without obtaining permits, including building a fence taller than allowed. Paul Hemmer, president of the local homeowners association, described the property as “Fort Knox.” Hemmer complained about the noise and commotion since Musk moved in, including transporting service employees and leaving cars on quiet streets. Musk might have to remove his fence if he loses challenges to local rules. People working for Musk cited security concerns and blamed a former employee for errors. Hemmer criticized Musk’s habit of building first and asking for permission later. Residents also complained about constant surveillance from Musk’s security, even when on their own property. Local commissioners appear unlikely to grant Musk exceptions.
