The Chinese manufacturing giant CATL, the largest supplier of batteries for electric vehicles globally, announced significant technological advancements that will enable it to produce cheaper, lighter, faster-charging, and cold-resistant batteries with extended driving ranges. These improvements are expected to be available in new cars within a few years, enhancing the competitiveness of electric vehicles against gasoline-powered models. CATL, or Contemporary Amperex Technology Company Ltd., supplies one-third of the world’s electric car batteries to major automakers such as General Motors and Tesla’s Shanghai factory. Its rivals include BYD in China and Korean and Japanese manufacturers. During a press conference ahead of the Shanghai auto show, CATL also introduced auxiliary batteries that can be integrated into the underbody of cars alongside the main battery. This innovation could redefine electric vehicle design and efficiency.
