Elon Musk Discusses His Role in Government and Future Plans for DOGE

WASHINGTON (AP) — Elon Musk, preparing to step back from his role leading the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE), addressed reporters at the White House. Known for his unconventional approach, Musk requested a joke before answering questions.

Musk defended DOGE’s work, acknowledging challenges such as lawsuits and resistance to accessing sensitive government data. Despite these hurdles, he claimed progress in reducing government spending, though falling short of the initial $1 trillion goal. Musk estimated cutting $160 billion so far and admitted reaching $1 trillion would be difficult due to complaints from the Cabinet and Congress.

Musk also mentioned restoring some government jobs that were “accidentally let go” and recommended increased spending on hypersonic missiles and drones for national defense. He expressed vague plans regarding DOGE’s future leadership and his own role, emphasizing that DOGE will continue gaining momentum.

Musk’s involvement with DOGE has been intense, working seven days a week initially, but he plans to reduce his commitment to one or two days a week. He also highlighted the limitation of his status as a special government employee, allowing him to work only 130 days in a 365-day period.
