Elon Musk says upgrade of FAA’s air traffic control system is failing and SpaceX needs to take over Verizon’s contract

Elon Musk stated on Thursday that Verizon’s efforts to upgrade the FAA’s air traffic control system are failing, emphasizing the need for SpaceX’s Starlink to take over. In a post on his social media platform X, Musk warned that the Verizon communication system supporting air traffic control is deteriorating rapidly. He cited an FAA assessment indicating a risk of catastrophic failure within single-digit months, which could jeopardize air traveler safety. The situation, according to Musk, is dire.

Verizon holds a $2.4 billion contract for the FAA Enterprise Network Services (FENS) program, aimed at upgrading the FAA’s communications infrastructure. In response to Musk’s claims, the FAA stated that no decisions have been made regarding the FENS program. Earlier this week, the FAA confirmed it is testing three Starlink terminals provided by SpaceX at no cost to evaluate their potential in restoring air traffic control connectivity.

Verizon clarified that another company currently manages the FAA’s existing systems. A spokesperson stated that Verizon is focused on building the next-generation system to support safe and secure air travel, as part of a multi-year effort to replace outdated legacy systems. The company’s solution is ready for deployment, and they continue to collaborate with the FAA on modernization goals.

The need for an upgrade to the FAA’s aging systems has been highlighted in reports, including a December publication by the Government Accountability Office titled “urgent FAA actions are needed to modernize aging systems.” While The Washington Post reported that the FAA is considering canceling Verizon’s contract in favor of SpaceX, such a decision could face legal challenges due to the complexities of terminating federal contracts.

Musk’s involvement in recommending federal spending cuts, including at the FAA, raises questions about potential conflicts of interest, given SpaceX’s operations are overseen by the agency. Recent aviation incidents have heightened public focus on air traffic safety, though investigations have not linked these events to Verizon’s systems. Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy has announced plans to collaborate with Musk to modernize airspace quickly.
