Google has entered into an agreement with Elementl Power, a nuclear developer, to fund the development of three nuclear sites. This partnership aims to provide reliable energy for Google’s data centers that power artificial intelligence models. The tech giant will contribute development capital for site permitting, contract negotiations, and other early-stage costs associated with these projects.
Each site is expected to generate at least 600 megawatts of power, and Google will have the option to purchase this energy once the projects are completed. Although the exact locations of the new sites have not been disclosed, Amanda Peterson Corio, Google’s global head of data center energy, stated that advanced nuclear technology offers dependable, baseload energy around the clock.
Elementl Power describes itself as ‘technology agnostic,’ meaning it remains flexible in choosing the type of reactor to use until the most advanced option is available. Founded in 2022, the company has yet to construct any sites but plans to raise additional capital from other sources when it comes time to build the projects.
The company aims to add over 10 gigawatts of nuclear power to the national grid by 2035. This collaboration aligns with Google’s commitment to catalyzing projects that strengthen the power grids where it operates, supporting both AI advancements and American innovation.
