Investigation Launched on Nearly 1.3 Million Ford F-150 Trucks for Potential Transmission Issue

The U.S. National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has initiated an investigation into nearly 1.3 million Ford F-150 trucks due to a potential transmission issue. The investigation follows over 100 consumer complaints regarding unexplained downshifts in the transmission of 2015-2017 model year vehicles, causing rapid deceleration. Some complaints also mention that the spontaneous downshift leads to rear wheels temporarily locking, seizing, or skidding, which increases the risk of accidents and injuries.

This probe specifically targets 2015-2017 F-150 trucks equipped with a 6-speed transmission. According to Ford Motor Company spokesperson Maria Buczkowski, the automaker is actively working with the agency to support the investigation. A preliminary evaluation is currently in progress to assess whether the issue’s scope and severity necessitate an official recall.

Additionally, Ford has issued recalls for nearly 50,000 vehicles due to a backup camera issue and faulty fixes from previous recalls. The NHTSA reported that the backup camera video output may fail in certain Ford and Lincoln models. Furthermore, two recalls were issued after incorrect fixes to prior recalls, affecting nearly 13,000 vehicles. Dealers are required to update the software free of charge and send notification letters by April 24.
