Microsoft has officially announced the opening of its first Datacenter Region in Chile, marking a historic investment that supports economic growth, technological innovation, and social development in the country. Located in the Santiago Metropolitan Region, the new cloud region, named Chile Central, comprises three independent physical locations, each housing one or more datacenters. This cutting-edge infrastructure will provide advanced digital services to businesses and public organizations, enhancing speed, privacy, security, local data storage compliance, and high availability. Operating at hyperscale, this region connects Chile to Microsoft’s robust global infrastructure and will also serve other South American countries. According to IDC, this new region is expected to generate $35.3 billion in new net revenues over the next four years from Microsoft, its partners, and cloud service users. Approximately $3.3 billion will be directly invested in Chile, contributing to local economic development and the creation of an estimated 81,041 jobs between 2025 and 2029. The launch is part of Microsoft’s Transforma Chile initiative, the company’s most ambitious investment plan in the country’s history, aimed at advancing Chile’s digital agenda inclusively. Since its inception in December 2020, the initiative has trained over 330,000 people in digital skills and brought connectivity to an additional 300,000 citizens in rural areas. Tito Arciniega, President of Microsoft Latin America, stated, “The cloud datacenter infrastructure in Chile will play a crucial role in our strategy for Latin America and help establish a hub that radiates innovation from the region to the world.” Fernando López Iervasi, President of Microsoft South America Hispana, added, “With the inauguration of our first Datacenter Region in Chile, we are not only deploying technological infrastructure that offers the most innovative cloud services with high levels of reliability, security, privacy, and data residency, but we are also building the future.” Chile’s President Gabriel Boric noted, “We are pleased that Microsoft has chosen our country to establish a datacenter region, allowing Chile to further integrate and become a technological hub for Latin America.” The new region will offer advanced cloud services including Azure, Microsoft 365, Dynamics 365, and Power Platform, positioning it among the most advanced globally. Microsoft’s sustainability goals include operating with 100% renewable energy in all buildings and datacenters by 2025, achieving water positivity by 2030, and reaching zero waste by the same year. In Chile, Microsoft’s datacenters operate with non-evaporative cooling technologies, consuming virtually no water. Through partnerships, Microsoft is also addressing water resource challenges in the Maipo basin. Since the launch of Transforma Chile, Microsoft has trained over 330,000 individuals in digital skills, issued more than 238,000 technical certifications, and helped 21,000 people find employment. “This is a significant step towards a more connected, inclusive society better prepared to face future challenges,” said Francisco Guzmán, President of ACTI.
