Microsoft has made a significant change in its leadership team as it rethinks its performance review process. Kathleen Hogan, the current chief people officer, will transition to a new role as executive vice president of the “Office of Strategy and Transformation.” Her position will be taken over by Amy Coleman, a long-standing HR executive at Microsoft.
In an email to employees, CEO Satya Nadella announced the change, emphasizing the need for adaptability and transformation in response to rapid changes across industries in the AI era. “As we’ve seen time and again throughout our 50-year history, times of great change for the world and for our industry require us to have a mindset that enables us to continually adapt and transform ourselves,” Nadella wrote.
The decision comes after Microsoft recently terminated nearly 2,000 employees identified as low-performers, reflecting a broader shift in the tech industry towards stricter performance standards. Since joining as CEO in 2014, Nadella appointed Hogan to craft a new workplace management system centered on a “growth mindset,” encouraging skill development through hard work and viewing challenges as learning opportunities.
Coleman is expected to significantly influence the redesign of Microsoft’s performance review process. Her extensive experience in HR roles across various departments positions her well for this new challenge.
