Workplace messaging platform Slack faced outages on Wednesday morning, with over 3,000 users reporting issues on DownDetector. According to Slack’s tech dashboard, users encountered problems with logging in, messaging, connectivity, apps/integrations/APIs, and workflows as of 11:30 a.m. EST. However, notifications, search, huddles, workspace administration, and canvases were unaffected.
Slack, a cloud-based messaging platform owned by Salesforce, has more than 200,000 paid customers globally and operates in over 150 countries. Originally founded in 2009 by Stewart Butterfield in Vancouver, Slack began as a project tied to an online game called Glitch. After the game failed, Butterfield pivoted to developing a workplace messaging tool, which launched in late 2013 to positive reviews and demand.
Salesforce acquired Slack in 2020 for $27.7 billion, marking its largest acquisition at the time.
