2026 Ethics Week at Notre Dame: Exploring the Economic and Moral Dimensions of Tariffs

The University of Notre Dame’s Mendoza College of Business is hosting its 2026 Ethics Week, a forum dedicated to examining tariffs through both economic and ethical lenses. The event will feature a series of talks from February 9 to 12, held daily from 12:05 to 1:00 p.m. EST in Mendoza Room 134. Open to the public, the sessions aim to foster dialogue on the broader implications of trade policies.

On February 9, Jimmy Gurulé, professor of law at Notre Dame, will present “An Attorney Looks at the Legal History of Tariffs.” A specialist in criminal law, counter-terrorism, and national security law, Gurulé also leads the Notre Dame Exoneration Justice Clinic, which works on cases involving wrongful convictions.

February 10 features Kristen Collett-Schmitt, associate dean for undergraduate and specialized master’s programs at Mendoza, discussing “Are Tariffs an Ethical Way to Influence the Economic Behavior of the United States’ Trade Partners?” Recognized for her teaching excellence, Collett-Schmitt’s research focuses on financial literacy, inclusive education methods, and economics pedagogy.

On February 11, Robert Johnson, the Brian and Jeannelle Brady Associate Professor of Economics, will address “How Should the United States Be Engaged with the Rest of the World?” Johnson, an expert in international trade and macroeconomics, investigates how global value chains affect economic interdependence among nations.

The series concludes on February 12 with Steve Wrappe (BBA ’80), CPA and transfer pricing technical leader at Grant Thornton’s National Tax Office in Washington, D.C., speaking on “Tariffs and Transfer Pricing: Viewing Both Sides of Their Battle.” With over 25 years of experience, Wrappe advises multinational corporations on transfer pricing strategy, compliance, and dispute resolution.

The event is open to the Notre Dame community and external attendees, offering a multidisciplinary perspective on one of today’s pressing economic policy issues.
