After a century as a downtown LA staple, The Original Pantry closes its doors

The Original Pantry Cafe in Downtown Los Angeles, a classic American diner since 1924, has closed its doors after more than a hundred years. Former L.A. Mayor Richard Riordan purchased the restaurant in 1981, and after his death, his administrative trust took over, deciding that selling the property would better fund the Riordan Foundation’s educational initiatives for low-income students. The diner was a passion project and never profitable. Fans of the Pantry gathered for one last meal, with long lines forming on its final day. Patrons shared memories of family meals and special occasions, expressing both joy and sorrow. Inside, diners left large tips and bid farewell to long-time waiters. Labor negotiations with UNITE HERE Local 11 to protect workers’ rights under new ownership were unsuccessful, marking the end of an era for this local institution. — news from LAist
