Arizona DES announces layoffs for 5% of its workforce, citing federal cuts

The Arizona Department of Economic Security (DES) has announced layoffs affecting approximately 5% of its workforce due to federal budget cuts. With around 8,000 employees, this means about 400 workers will be impacted. Michael Wisehart, director of DES, stated that these reductions were necessary given the current financial landscape shaped by unexpected federal funding reductions.

Not all divisions within DES are affected, but further reorganizations are anticipated as the department adapts to a leaner budget. Affected workers were notified that their final day would be July 4, providing them with roughly two and a half weeks’ notice.
