Canned Beans Recalled in 23 States Due to Undeclared Soy Allergen

An urgent recall has been issued for canned beans sold at Walmart and other grocery stores due to a potential life-threatening health risk. The FDA is recalling 4,510 cases of Yellowstone Brown Sugar Molasses Baked Beans sold across 23 states because they contain undeclared soy. Approximately 1.9 million people in the US are allergic to soy and could suffer from anaphylaxis if they consume it, which is a severe allergic reaction that can cause difficulty breathing. No illnesses or adverse reactions have been reported so far, but the FDA is advising people to discard the beans or return them to stores for a full refund. The affected beans are sold in 15-ounce cans with a best-by date of February 17, 2028, and were manufactured by the Tennessee-based Vietti Food Group. The cans feature a black label with a large, yellow ‘Y’ on the front and a picture of beans cooking in a saucepan. The recall involves states such as Arizona, Colorado, Delaware, Florida, Georgia, Illinois, Iowa, Kansas, Kentucky, Louisiana, Michigan, Mississippi, Missouri, New Hampshire, New York, North Carolina, Ohio, Oregon, Pennsylvania, Tennessee, Texas, Utah, and Virginia. It is likely that the soy was contained in the sauce, where it is used to tone down the sweetness and add depth to the flavor. Food workers failed to declare the sauce’s presence on the label, leading to the recall. Soy is one of nine major allergens and poses no risks to those without a soy allergy. However, for those with a soy allergy, symptoms can include a tingling sensation in the mouth, swelling of the lips and face, hives, itching, eczema, abdominal pain, diarrhea, and nausea. — new from Daily Mail
