Economic Uncertainty Increases Demand for Thanksgiving Food Aid in San Antonio

SAN ANTONIO – On Saturday, multiple nonprofit groups across San Antonio distributed turkeys to support families facing food insecurity, serving hundreds amid growing economic pressures.

Andrew Perales, one of many waiting in line at Greater Love Baptist Church, expressed gratitude for community solidarity. “It’s encouraging to see people come together to support one another during tough times,” he said. “I’m thankful this is happening.”

Reverend James Robinson, who has organized the event for 22 years, noted this year’s crowd stretched close to a mile, signaling heightened need.

At Covington Park, the Bexar County Health Department provided turkeys to grandparents raising grandchildren. Mary Mendez, a caregiver for her granddaughter and four-year-old great-grandson, emphasized the widespread need during holidays.

Bexar County Judge Peter Sakai acknowledged the seriousness of food insecurity, calling it an ongoing challenge.

Numerous local groups are offering free turkeys this week. A complete list of distribution sites is available online.
