The Egyptian petroleum refining companies held their periodic forum in Alexandria under the theme “Exchanging Expertise and Information to Build Successful Models and Sustainable Economic Operations.” The event, conducted in alignment with directives from Engineer Karim Badawy, Minister of Petroleum and Mineral Resources, emphasized strengthening collaboration among refining firms as part of the second pillar of the ministry’s strategic framework. The gathering aimed to enhance integration, share success stories, and address operational challenges across the sector.
Senior officials attended, including Engineer Salah Abdel-Karim, CEO of the Egyptian General Petroleum Authority, alongside his deputies for refining, planning and projects, foreign trade, and occupational safety and environmental protection. The first day featured presentations from leadership and operational teams of key refining companies such as Amoc, Alexandria Petroleum, Al-Amriya, Assiut Petroleum, and Anobek.
Abdel-Karim highlighted that the forum builds on outcomes from the previous meeting in Suez, particularly leveraging existing capacities within refining firms to achieve integrated economic performance. He cited successful cooperation, such as Cairo Petroleum Refining Company’s support in rehabilitating boilers at Alexandria Petroleum and joint efforts with Assiut Petroleum. He stressed the importance of sustaining and improving performance, especially in public-sector companies, which possess substantial resources and expertise to enhance efficiency. These improvements are expected to positively impact Egypt’s broader national economy.
He also noted that both local and global petroleum industries offer successful models that can be adapted and applied. Major ongoing projects, including the new Anobek diesel complex scheduled to begin operations next year, are set to significantly strengthen refining capabilities and economic returns.
Investing in human capital was underscored as a priority, with emphasis on continuous training, workplace safety, and raising awareness to ensure a secure and productive work environment. The sector’s skilled workforce remains central to maintaining operational excellence.
Engineer Magdy El-Kordy, head of Alexandria Mineral Oils Company (Amoc), outlined current opportunities and challenges, including boosting candle and base oil production through improved operational efficiency and stronger financial and environmental performance. These efforts align with Amoc’s vision for sustainable growth and increased profitability, benefiting both shareholders and the national economy. Deputy Refining Officer Engineer Wael Ra’zq affirmed the necessity of continuous development in operations, personnel, and products. He acknowledged Amoc’s progress in development initiatives and affirmed institutional support for state-led efforts to properly manage used oils through standardized and environmentally sound processes, countering unsafe informal recycling.
Engineer Reham Alfa, head of Alexandria Petroleum Company, presented completed development projects at Petromin, supporting export operations and increasing solvent deliveries. She also discussed progress on constructing five new storage facilities in partnership with San Egypt and collaborative work with Cairo Petroleum to rehabilitate boilers 1 and 2, all aimed at enhancing operational efficiency.
Engineer Ibrahim Mutaaw, Deputy for Planning and Projects, emphasized the collective commitment to accelerating new project implementation, with proposed solutions to challenges being swiftly enacted.
Engineer Mohamed Sobhy, head of Al-Amriya Petroleum Company, addressed specific challenges, including dedicated flaring at the aromatic complex that supplies products to the domestic market and neighboring firms. He highlighted the urgency of completing hydrogen production unit upgrades and ongoing replacement and modernization efforts, including upgrades to 21 existing tanks, construction of six new ones, and modifications to the improvement and aromatics complex.
Engineer Mahmoud Nagy, head of Assiut Petroleum Refining Company, detailed coordination with Anobek to ensure stable feedstock and operations for the new diesel plant in Upper Egypt. Continuous development and performance monitoring are underway, with notable achievements including a record-speed turnaround and efficiency upgrade of Unit 1, which enhanced team expertise. Additional accomplishments include electrical station upgrades (130 MW capacity), replacement of heat exchangers and coolers, sustained fuel oil and jet fuel supply to Nile Petroleum, and joint plans with Anobek to develop Assiut’s central laboratory into a regional hub serving both companies and Central and Southern Upper Egypt, contributing to energy consumption savings.
