Egyptian Pound Holds Steady Against the Dollar Amid Economic Challenges

The exchange rate of the US dollar against the Egyptian pound remained stable on Saturday, June 21, 2025, during morning trading, coinciding with the weekly bank holiday. No significant changes were recorded from the last announced rates on Thursday. However, experts predict potential fluctuations due to various economic factors both locally and globally.

Citizens are closely monitoring the dollar’s movements as it significantly impacts the prices of goods and services in Egypt, especially with rising import levels and the government’s focus on repaying foreign debt installments and interest. The demand for hard currency is also high to import gas during the summer season.

According to the latest updates from official bank websites, the exchange rates are as follows: Central Bank of Egypt (buy: 50.61 EGP, sell: 50.71 EGP), National Bank of Egypt and Banque Misr (buy: 50.60 EGP, sell: 50.70 EGP), Commercial International Bank (CIB) (buy: 50.60 EGP, sell: 50.70 EGP), and others.

Economic expert Dr. Ihab El-Dosouky noted that while the dollar appears stable, an upward trend is expected due to a clear dollar funding gap, increased summer demand for gas imports, and external obligations like debt repayments. He warned that any rise in the dollar would lead to higher prices for essential goods, urging the government to regulate imports and promote local manufacturing.
