Elon Musk, despite his large following, has faced resistance from residents of the affluent West Lake Hills suburb in Austin, Texas, according to the New York Times. A $6 million home Musk bought in 2022 has sparked controversy after his team installed an unauthorized 16-foot chain-link fence, a metal gate, and outward-facing cameras.
Paul Hemmer, a Tesla owner and retired real estate agent living across the street, described Musk’s property as ‘Fort Knox.’ Hemmer, who serves as president of the neighborhood homeowners association, expressed concerns about the disruption caused by Musk’s armed security personnel and their vehicles. The neighborhood’s tranquility has been disturbed, and some residents are worried about Musk’s tendency to proceed without permits. Hemmer noted in a planning meeting, ‘If you follow him at all in the news, he’s always guilty of building stuff and then asking for permission later.’ Additionally, tensions escalated when Musk’s security team reported Hemmer to the police, alleging he was naked in the street. Hemmer, who has used drones to inspect Musk’s property for ordinance violations, claimed he was on his own property in his underwear.
