Following Apple’s legal defeat regarding its App Store model, Epic Games has swiftly announced two significant business moves. Fortnite is set to return to the iOS App Store in the U.S. next week under a court order that prevents Apple from blocking apps directing users to the web for digital content purchases. Apple is also barred from collecting a 27% commission on web-based sales originating from App Store apps.
Epic Games has introduced a new commission structure, taking 0% commission on the first $1 million of revenue per app annually. After surpassing $1 million, Epic will take a 12% commission. This contrasts with Apple’s typical 15-30% commission rate, reduced to 15% for the first $1 million in revenue through its Small Business Program.
Additionally, Epic Games is launching Epic Games Store Webshops, enabling developers to direct users to their own webshops for out-of-app purchases. This provides a more cost-effective alternative to in-app purchases, where Apple, Google, and others charge higher fees. With new legal rulings in place, developers can send players from games to make digital purchases from webshops on platforms like iOS in the European Union and United States.
Players spending in Epic Webshops will earn 5% Epic Rewards on all purchases. Both initiatives are planned for next month.
