A large crowd gathered at the Center City Macy’s on Saturday to celebrate the Wanamaker Organ with a daylong concert, marking the department store’s final weekend. Renowned organists, including Peter Richard Conte, played throughout the day from 9 a.m. to 6:30 p.m. in an event titled “Make a Joyful Noise.” The music resonated through the store, touching the hearts of many attendees. Carol Jackson, despite undergoing cancer treatment, attended the event, reminiscing about her childhood visits to Wanamaker’s. Stephanie Mokan also shared her cherished memories of purchasing her first designer accessory at the store. Pete Steffa, a member of the Friends of the Wanamaker Organ, expressed hope for the organ’s continued presence in the building’s future. Built in 1904, the Wanamaker Organ is a National Historic Landmark and the largest fully-functioning organ in the world, featuring over 28,000 pipes. Ray Biswanger, executive director of Friends of the Wanamaker Organ, confirmed discussions with building owner TF Cornerstone regarding the organ’s preservation. Supporters are optimistic that public performances will continue. — news from WHYY
