GM’s LMR Battery Breakthrough Offers Extended Range at Lower Costs

General Motors (GM) has unveiled its latest Lithium Manganese Rich (LMR) battery technology, which promises to deliver greater range at a reduced cost compared to current lithium-ion batteries. According to GM, the new LMR batteries will offer approximately 30% more range than today’s maximum-range Lithium Iron Phosphate (LFP) packs while maintaining affordability. This innovation is part of GM’s broader strategy to achieve price parity between electric vehicles (EVs) and internal combustion engine (ICE) vehicles without relying on federal tax incentives. The LMR technology will debut in trucks by 2028, complementing GM’s existing lineup of prismatic cells. Additionally, GM is investing in domestic material sourcing and production, exemplified by its partnership with Element 25 to secure manganese supplies in North America. These advancements underscore GM’s commitment to advancing EV technology and promoting widespread adoption.
