Investigation Ordered Into Power Outage Near Heathrow

Energy Secretary Ed Miliband has instructed the National Energy System Operator (NESO) to urgently investigate the power outage caused by a substation fire that disrupted operations at Heathrow Airport on Friday. The probe into Britain’s electricity grid will aim to construct a clear understanding of the events surrounding this incident and assess the broader energy resilience of the UK to ensure such an event does not recur, according to the Department for Energy Security and Net Zero. “We are determined to properly understand what happened and what lessons need to be learned,” stated Miliband. The fire at the North Hyde substation in west London, which provides power to the airport, resulted in thousands of canceled flights and stranded passengers globally. Miliband emphasized that the investigation is commissioned to uncover any broader lessons on energy resilience for critical national infrastructure, both currently and in the future. NESO is anticipated to present its preliminary findings to the power regulator Ofgem and the Department for Energy Security and Net Zero within six weeks.
