Let’s End the Misleading Economic Fears Surrounding Article 2

There continues to be widespread alarm about potential economic disaster if Article 2 is approved, but these claims lack factual grounding. Will any local business actually lose revenue due to the proposed regulations? The answer is no. Charter fishing operations will not cancel trips—as long as fish are caught, business continues. Establishments like Cru will not sell fewer lobster rolls, and municipal tax income will remain unaffected. These doomsday predictions are unfounded. n nThe island already has sufficient short-term rental capacity to accommodate visitor demand. Once one host reaches their rental limit, others can step in, distributing the burden more evenly and reducing the strain on residential areas caused by relentless commercial activity. The market is adaptable and will naturally rebalance. n nImportantly, Article 2 does not impose limits on owner-occupied properties; homeowners can still rent out their cottages or houses freely. This flexibility supports both residents and the local economy. It’s time to move past exaggerated warnings. Article 2 is a balanced measure that supports sustainable growth and benefits the island’s long-term economic health. n— news from Nantucket Current

Let’s Stop With The Economic Scare Tactics On Article 2
To the editor: We keep hearing that there will be economic armageddon if Article 2 passes. However, is any island business going to lose a dollar due to the proposed restrictions of Article 2? Absolutely not. No charter boat is going to lose a trip (providing they can catch a fish) and Cru certainly isn’t going to sell one less lobster roll, nor is the town going to lose any tax dollars… that is utter nonsense. n nThere is STR capacity on the island to meet the demand of renters, once an operator reaches their quota others will pick up the slack, the load will be spread and give neighbors and neighborhoods a break from the constant commercial churn. The market will adjust. n nArticle 2 also allows for a property that is owner-occupied to rent your cottage or house without any restrictions. Let’s stop with the economic scare tactics. Article 2 is reasonable and will be good for our island economy. n nSincerely, n nCarl Jelleme
