Saudi Arabia and the Islamic Republic of Pakistan have agreed to establish a new economic cooperation framework aimed at strengthening mutual interests and enhancing trade and investment ties, according to a statement released by the Saudi Press Agency (SPA) on Tuesday.
The agreement was announced during a meeting in Riyadh between Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman and Pakistani Prime Minister Muhammad Shehbaz Sharif. The framework reflects a shared vision between the two nations to build a sustainable partnership across various economic, commercial, and investment sectors.
In September, the two countries signed a strategic defense pact as part of broader efforts to promote regional and global security.
The newly announced framework includes collaboration on key projects in economic development, trade, investment, and industrial growth. It aims to deepen bilateral cooperation, empower the private sector, and expand trade volumes, particularly in energy, mining, information technology, tourism, agriculture, food security, and manufacturing.
Both sides are currently exploring joint economic initiatives, including a memorandum of understanding (MoU) for an electricity interconnection project between the two countries, as well as another MoU focused on energy cooperation.
The statement noted that leaders from both nations aim to convene the Saudi-Pakistani Supreme Coordination Council in the near future to oversee the implementation of joint plans and projects.
Pakistan recently reached a preliminary agreement with the International Monetary Fund earlier this month for two loans totaling 1.2 billion dollars under separate programs to support its economy and strengthen financial stability.
