Solar and Wind Surpass Coal in US Electricity Generation

For the first time in the US, wind and solar energy have surpassed coal in electricity production, according to a report from Ember. Coal’s share dropped to 15%, while solar and wind combined accounted for 17%. Solar energy was the fastest-growing electricity source in 2024, contributing 81% of added annual capacity. Utility-scale solar grew by a record 31 gigawatts. Despite federal policies under the Trump administration favoring fossil fuels, market forces continue to drive renewable energy adoption. Electricity demand rose by 3% last year, partly driven by AI data centers and electric vehicles. A report suggests the US needs to install 900 gigawatts of renewable energy and batteries by 2040. Despite challenges, solar energy remains a cost-effective solution. — news from The Verge
