Syria has officially launched the Syrian-British Business Council in Damascus, a move aimed at strengthening economic and investment cooperation between the two nations. This development follows the United Kingdom’s decision to lift sanctions on Syria, including the removal of restrictions on Syrian President Ahmed Al-Sharaa and Interior Minister Anas Al-Khatib in early November.
The council, set to become operational in Syria by early 2026 and led by the private sector, aims to establish mutually beneficial business partnerships and contribute to Syria’s development by enhancing its commercial and educational environment, according to reports from the state-run SANA news agency.
Minister of Economy and Industry Nidal al-Shaar highlighted that the initiative signifies Syria’s reintegration into the international community and the restoration of its economic standing. He noted that such councils serve as platforms for public-private collaboration and help promote viable investment opportunities.
Finance Minister Mohammad Yasser Barneih described the council as a strategic platform to expand employment prospects and deepen bilateral economic and investment relations. He emphasized the presence of promising investment opportunities in Syria and called for stronger collaboration between Syrian and British entrepreneurs to attract capital and support business activities within the country.
Meanwhile, Minister of Communications and Information Technology Abdul Salam Hikmat underscored the council’s role in reinforcing Syria’s return to the global stage and restoring its commercial identity. He pointed to the importance of Syrian companies in forming economic alliances and transferring expertise across sectors, which would support national economic development and open new avenues for cooperation with the UK.
It is worth noting that the Syrian-British Business Council was initially launched in London on November 13.
In related developments, John Wilkes, an advisor to the council, revealed plans for an upcoming business conference in Damascus aimed at bringing together entrepreneurs and launching joint ventures. He stressed the council’s importance in revitalizing economic relations between Syria and Britain after years of deterioration.
