Several Tesla owners have sold their vehicles due to Elon Musk’s political activities and fears of harassment, according to interviews conducted by Business Insider.
Four former Tesla owners cited Musk’s involvement with DOGE and concerns over being targeted as primary reasons for selling their electric vehicles (EVs). While Tesla has gained a new customer in President Donald Trump, who expressed support for Musk, some long-time Tesla enthusiasts have grown disillusioned.
One owner, Scott Oran, a real estate developer near Boston, explained that he sold his 2018 Model 3 because it no longer aligned with his values. Initially attracted by Tesla’s environmental mission, Oran felt compelled to protest Musk’s actions involving DOGE, which he perceives as undermining American democracy.
Another unnamed owner, drawn to Tesla’s commitment to reducing fossil fuel dependency, decided to sell his 2021 Model 3 performance variant after becoming uncomfortable with Musk’s political gestures and fearing potential backlash.
Fear of harassment also played a role. One former owner noted instances of aggressive driving behaviors directed at him, prompting safety concerns, especially with a newborn child onboard.
Two former owners have transitioned to Polestar vehicles, appreciating their build quality and driving experience. Meanwhile, resale values for used Teslas have dropped, raising concerns among owners about further depreciation linked to Musk’s conduct.
