The World Economic Forum has released a report on the future of work, considering the significant impact of artificial intelligence (AI) development across various countries and professions. This technological advancement has led to the decline of some professions that were once popular in recent decades.
According to the report, the workforce has recovered after a pandemic-induced drop and is now at levels similar to those in 2019, except in lower-middle-income countries, where there has been an increase. These economies, representing about 40% of the global population, are expected to drive most of the growth in the working-age population.
The “Future of Jobs Survey” gathered information from employers about roles expected to grow, decline, or remain stable within their organizations over the next five years. Respondents identified macro trends and technological advancements driving these changes.
Some of the jobs seeing rapid growth include Big Data specialists, FinTech engineers, AI and machine learning specialists, software developers, and security management experts. Conversely, roles like graphic designers, postal workers, bank tellers, and data entry clerks are declining.
Generative AI (GenAI), especially since the launch of Chat GPT in November 2022, has transformed investment and adoption across various sectors. Capital flows into AI have grown nearly eightfold, boosting investments in physical infrastructure like servers and power plants. This technology allows workers to interact with systems as if engaging in human conversation, reducing barriers and simplifying professional use.
Demand for GenAI-related skills has significantly increased among companies and individuals, reflecting a growing need in the labor market. Although widespread adoption of AI applications remains limited, with only a small fraction of firms utilizing them in 2023, the growth is notable and uneven across sectors. The IT sector leads in AI adoption, while industries like construction lag behind.
This evolution suggests that training in GenAI will be essential to stay competitive. The World Economic Forum highlights that while growth is rapid, unequal adoption could influence the global distribution of jobs and skills, marking a turning point in how industries and individuals prepare for future labor market challenges and opportunities.
