Today in Kuwait’s history

KUWAIT, June 18 (KUNA) — On this day in Kuwait’s history, several significant events took place. In 1960, Kuwait’s Amir Sheikh Abdullah Al-Salem Al-Sabah signed a law to regulate the legal profession. By 1963, Kuwait Fishing was established as a shareholding company with a capital of KD one million (USD 3.3 million). In 2000, UNESCO designated Kuwait as the headquarters for motherhood and children initiatives. The following year, in 2001, the National Assembly approved the GCC Joint Defense Treaty, which was signed in December 2000.

In 2002, the Higher Education Council restructured the educational system, changing it from four years at each level to five years at the elementary level, four at the intermediate level, and three at the high school level. That same year, the Criminal Evidence Directorate General at the Ministry of Interior launched the DNA identification laboratory. By 2007, Amir Sheikh Sabah Al-Ahmad Al-Sabah signed a law limiting the number of people granted Kuwaiti citizenship in 2007 to 2,000 individuals.

In 2008, several decrees were issued by Sheikh Sabah Al-Ahmad Al-Sabah, including the establishment of the Kuwait International Law School and the Higher Enterprise Authority. Additionally, he launched the National Campaign for Marine Life Conservation (Senyar 2) to protect Kuwaiti islands and marine ecosystems. In 2014, the Kuwait Fund for Arab Economic Development (KFAED) signed a grant deal worth approximately USD 50 million with Djibouti as part of Gulf aid efforts to finance its national investment program.

In 2020, the Kuwait Foreign Petroleum Exploration Company (KUFPEC) announced its first oil production from a well located in the Gulf of Suez in Egypt. Amid the coronavirus pandemic, the Kuwait Government adjusted curfew hours to be from 7:00 p.m. to 5:00 a.m. and lifted blockades on certain areas, effective June 21. Travel restrictions were also modified, allowing citizens to travel abroad only after confirming urgent need.

In 2023, Jaber Al-Ahmad hospital successfully utilized a “smart” surgical network to treat stomach hernias in several patients. Additionally, an Amiri order formed the 44th government of Kuwait, headed by Sheikh Ahmad Nawaf Al-Ahmad Al-Sabah, comprising 15 ministers.
