Today in Kuwait’s history

KUWAIT, Aug 18 (KUNA) — On this day in history, several notable events have shaped Kuwait’s national journey. In 1952, Sultan Ibrahim Al-Klaib passed away at the age of 63. Throughout his life, he contributed to public service, including roles on the “Al-Maaref” council and the municipal council. In 1990, amid Iraq’s invasion of Kuwait, the Iraqi regime began assembling communities from allied nations at strategic sites across Kuwait and Iraq, using them as human shields during the initial phase of the occupation. That same year, the United Nations Security Council unanimously passed a resolution demanding Iraq permit foreign nationals to leave both countries safely and refrain from endangering their lives. In 1992, Kuwait and France signed a bilateral agreement in Paris aimed at enhancing defense cooperation in the event of external threats. The year 1999 saw the founding of the Kuwait Health Insurance Company with a capital of KD five million, with the Public Institution for Social Security (PIFSS) holding 99.9 percent of its shares. In 2000, Kuwaiti artist Marzoug Al-Marzoug, a key figure in establishing Kuwait’s television theater group, died at the age of 54. In 2007, the Kuwait Institute for Scientific Research (KISR) recorded a 4.3-magnitude earthquake in Al-Manageesh, located in southern Kuwait. A decade later, in 2016, Kuwait Petroleum Corporation (KPC) and the Arab Petroleum Pipelines Company (SUMED) signed a memorandum of understanding to jointly explore potential oil-related initiatives. In 2020, life in Kuwait began to stabilize as authorities gradually lifted restrictions related to the COVID-19 pandemic. Also that year, the National Assembly debated a parliamentary interpellation targeting Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Interior Anas Al-Saleh. The motion, initiated by MP Shuaib Al-Muwaizri, garnered support from ten lawmakers calling for a no-confidence vote, though Al-Saleh ultimately retained his position. In 2021, sports journalist Hussein Al-Bloushi launched the country’s first dedicated sports museum, housing thousands of memorabilia and personal items from prominent football players. Most recently, in 2024, the Dasman Diabetes Institute (DDI) announced that Dr. Fawaz Al-Zaid, a researcher and head of the Department of Bioenergy and Neurosciences, had been elected to the European Association for the Study of Diabetes (EASD) global council—an honor marking him as the first Kuwaiti national to join this esteemed body.
