Tracking Donald Trump’s Approval Ratings Amid Shifting Public Opinion

Donald Trump’s popularity continues to be a focal point in American politics. Even out of office, his influence on the political agenda and public sentiment remains significant. As he begins his second term, The Economist is tracking public opinion on his presidency week by week.

YouGov, an online pollster, surveys 1,500 American adults weekly on various topics, including immigration, the economy, gun control, and health care. These surveys provide a snapshot of shifting American views over the past 16 years.

Trump’s net favorability—calculated by subtracting unfavorable opinions from favorable ones—has fluctuated throughout his political career. After winning the 2024 election, his favorability surged briefly into positive territory for the first time. However, early signs suggest this popularity may not endure.

Demographically, Trump receives the highest favorability ratings from white men, while college graduates consistently rate him lower. Key issues like inflation, jobs, and immigration remain top concerns for voters, with partisans prioritizing different topics.

Public opinion shapes presidencies, as seen during Trump’s first term when health care dominated concerns, especially after the covid-19 outbreak. Similarly, inflation became a defining issue during Biden’s presidency due to the pandemic and geopolitical events.
