U.S. retail egg prices decreased in April, marking the first decline since October 2024. According to the Consumer Price Index, the average price for a dozen Grade A eggs dropped by 12.7% to $5.12. However, prices remain near record highs due to an ongoing bird flu outbreak that has decimated flocks of egg-laying hens. Since early 2022, over 169 million birds have been affected, with outbreaks in Ohio and South Dakota impacting more than 927,000 egg-laying hens in April alone. Despite the decline, April’s price is still 79% higher than the same period last year.
